The scenic route

This morning I decided to wake up earlier and take a different route to work on Deider (the bike). The ride didn’t have to take as long as it did - I managed to stop every three minutes to admire the view and take bad photos on my phone. Oh and happy New Year!

Bromptoning it up

If you follow me on Twitter you likely would’ve seen my photos of a silly looking contraption with tiny wheels. Meet Deider, the Brompton folding bike: I named him Deider after the Polish Arabian gelding I rode when working at a horse farm in Alabama. He was the best horse ever and, like the Brompton, was on the small side. The choice to get a silly looking folding bike rather than a “proper” bike stemmed from two things:

Bellmanstafetten relay race - didn't die!

Yesterday I took part in Bellmanstafetten - a 5km relay race - with other runners from DICE. We had three teams, one of which was aiming to beat last year’s company record for the race (I wasn’t on that one). We got shirts and everything! Bellmanstafetten is a relay race consisting of five people per team, each of whom runs 5km before passing a baton to the next in line. I was on the awesome DICE Team Two:

How not to run Midnattsloppet

Midnattsloppet is a yearly night-time 10km race in Sweden, taking place in multiple cities including Stockholm. I’ve been signed up for months. It was yesterday. Let me tell you about it. I have only eaten lunch and a honeycomb, preparing my stomach for the run. I’m standing in line for the porta-potties at what I think is the Zinkensdamm Arena. I glance at my entry level Garmin GPS watch nervously - I have 20 minutes to pee and get to my start position.

A traumatic [read: wimpy] experience

This Monday I went to the doctor about my leg pain. She ruled out a stress fracture and said it was most likely a calf strain, but that the pain I describe could also point to deep vein thrombosis. “I’ll just take a little blood so we can run a test.” She told me. I froze like a deer in headlights in my chair. “Blood? Right…right now?” “Yes, just to rule out the unlikely possibility of deep vein thrombosis.

Revelation: I don't actually want to run a half marathon...

Yestreday I realized that I don’t actually want to run a half marathon. It’s not like I couldn’t, if I trained up for it. I’ve done the distance before. Heck, I even entered the City to Surf half marathon in Perth with every intention of running it until I broke my foot a couple of months before the race. And it’s not like I don’t think running a half marathon would be a great achievement.

Snails, running, and Sweden

This is going to be two-part post about both A Game of Snails and running (and Sweden!) A Game of Snails I took a few days off of A Game of Snails, but it’s coming along pretty nicely overall. The last week has been set on setting up the database. You can now save users and snails to the database, load a player’s snails when they log in, etc. Up next I just need to start saving a player’s snail jars (players can buy more jars with virtual currency to be able to house more snails).

Sweden weather is improving so I'm ditching the treadmill. It hurts.

I feel almost guilty when I post non game or tech-related posts to this blog because I know the majority of people who come here tend to do so for the game/Impact/JS posts. However, this is a personal site and I do more than sit at a keyboard all day, so posts about running, Sweden, travel, etc are going to happen. Running and exercise is probably the category that’ll be popping up the most (after games) over the next few months as Stockholm warms up and I restart my training.

What an awesome weekend. New keyboard and mouse, Fremantle, and a great run.

It’s been quite a fricking awesome weekend - full of work, PC peripherals, and distractions. And I just finished my first 5km run under 25 minutes since my fracture, so the endorphins are going and I feel like writing. Oh, what? You want handy anchor links? Here you go: PC peripherals Fremantle 5km run New Peripherals The Microsoft Arc Touch mouse is absolute crap for games I’ve always used a regular desktop mouse when playing games, no fancy gaming mouse or anything of the sort.

2011 HBF Run for a Reason completed!

Today was the 2011 HBF Run for a Reason. Despite the fact that I was feeling quite sick on Friday, I pulled myself together for the run. Free Transperth services were running, roads were closed, people’s breath misted through the air in the chill. I went to bed extra early on Saturday (at 8:45pm) and woke up at 5:15am in the dark, padding out of the bedroom so as not to disturb C and sleepily tugging on my running clothes.
